I have been following the football program very closely the past few years to see what is wrong with it. There are a few things that I notice right away.
1. Not very much loyalty from in-state kids. I think this has a lot to do with winning and obviously we haven't done as much of that as others in the past years. But there are so many kids from Illinois that say "My dream school is Michigan or OSU" Well no kids in Michigan or OSU are dreaming of Illinois right now.
2. To piggy back off of point number 1 it also starts with the adults as well. Kids usually take after what teams their parents like and we just flat out don't have much support right now which leads to lower donations and attendance numbers.
3. Continuity. I know most people wanted Beckman gone and those who were okay with him staying wanted Banks gone. We have been recruiting for the 4-2-5 defense for several years now so I would like to see what these guys can do. Try to stick with a system. I mean look at the offense, Nate had 4 coordinators and ran 4 pretty different offenses. Decide on something and stick with it.
I personally feel Mike Thomas is doing his part to gain back the in-state loyalty. He got back the contract with 670 TheScore for radio and is working with Chicago Alum on making us a stronger brand. If kids see Illinois everywhere they look growing up it will help us out in the future. In Iowa there is never a store with Illinois gear in it. I cannot say the same about Illinois stores. But we all know what the biggest thing is- WIN AND THEY WILL COME!
Love to hear everyone's opinion on this!

Basketball hasn't had a lot of in-state support but they are getting better. Right now we can go to Simeon and get almost anyone we want because Robert Smith loves Groce. We need a football factory to just filter kids to Illinois.
If kids from in-state start staying home then others will grow up watching them and may create some loyalty. EX A kid in middle school or early in high school right now sees Mike Dudek from Neuqua Valley play 4 years at Illinois he will pay more attention to Illinoi

Keep these former players happy and they are more likely to help get a kid to your school

We need to keep playing in Chicago, putting ourselves in a larger spotlight helps with the in-state. Another problem is Beckman can't recruit as well Zook.

I wouldn't mind seeing our game vs Northwestern played at Soldier Field every year. This game will always be played over Thanksgiving for a while so students won't be on campus.
I also think our staff is really building good relationships with the high school coaches in the state. They know we need to do a better job of keeping kids home and are working hard at it.

If we can bring in impact JC recruits that will certainly help. Bringing in more matured players (ideally) helps reduce the number of mistakes on the field.

I think that the JUCOs are definitely band-aids right now. Starting next year we should have a lot more class balance and will have a program built. We need to redshirt our OL and DL every year unless they are 4/5* guys. Can't keep throwing fresh and sophs that aren't ready out there

You hit it on the head not enough in state loyalty and bad fans that's all it is I live in Memphis I go to a game every year that's 6 and a half hours I live in SEC country and for ANY Illinois fan in chicago saying they can't make it is BS but it doesn't help being 2 and a half hours away from most of your fan base but no one even showed up when we did have a game in Chicago so IMO it's our own faults

In state loyalty is so hard to get without being able to promote yourself well. The Illini don't have a very strong brand when it comes to football. Hopefully the our state our team helps get our name more well known and helps keep the in state prospects.
